Begging, begging yoooou - for some Handbags...

Good morning to you all. Hope you are well. Us? Oh we are OK thank you very much. You look lovely today.

Yes we are schmoozing you all as we are on the beg again. Last week we had some great sales of Handbags and now we have half empty shelves!

If, like me, you have a bag for every day of the week and then some and there are some buried in those deep dark wardrobe recesses, and while the weather is rainy and yuck if you have a sort out and decide to part with some, please please please bring them in to us here at Brook Green.

Clutch bags, Beaded evening bags, Shopper style bags, Shoulder bags and Tote bags.

Anything and everything bag related - but not suitcases for the moment as we have many!

(Oh and all you UK taxpayers - if you wouldn't mind signing up to Gift Aid that would be lovely too.)

Things and Stuff, Stuff and Things

Obviously you have got the memo that we sell whatever things people donate in to us, what with Brook Green being a Charity shop, an all.

After Christmas, there is always a small lull before the New year clear outs, and now we are running low on some stock, so here we are, cap in hand, with a biiiiiiiig smile asking for Ladies Tops and Men's Shirts.
These are our best sellers and so need to keep our rails topped up with fresh stock everyday, but recently the rails have been slightly more empty than we like!

Shirts, blouses, vest tops, t-shirts, jumpers, we will take them from you and make good use of them!
High Fashion. High Street. Doesn't matter.

If you have things buried in the back of your wardrobe which you no longer wear (or have never worn...we all do it...oops) or no longer like or no longer have room for, please, please, please think of us on Shepherds Bush Road, London and bring in your goodies during opening hours.
If you can, sign up to Gift Aid, and we will be eternally grateful.

Thanking you muchly

So, What exactly is Gift Aid?

We mention it as often as we can as it really makes a difference to Trinity Hospice when raising funds, via the shops, ebay or fundraising.

Gift Aid increases the value of your donations and we can benefit even more at no extra cost to you, the donor.

If you're a UK taxpayer, add Gift Aid whenever you make a donation and the charity can reclaim the basic rate of tax on your gift - that's a 25p for every £1 you give.
And it works with donated items too! So if we sell that Jacket you no longer want for £10, with gift aid it will actually make £12.50 for Trinity Hospice! BRILLIANT!
Sign up and get a free fob! WIN

Gift Aid allows individuals who are subject to UK income tax to complete a simple, short declaration that they are a UK taxpayer. Gift Aid can only be reclaimed on money donated by UK taxpayers, so after asking if you would like to gift aid your item, we have to ask if you are a UK taxpayer - we are not being nosey, but it only works if you are, so please do not think we are prying.

In order to make a Gift Aid donation you’ll need to make a Gift Aid declaration, which is a simple and quick form we have here (or you can do it online here). We give you a fob which is yours to keep so when you donated again, you can bring it in and we can find your gift aid number. (But if you forget it, it is not a problem as we can still find you on the system, it just takes a bit longer....)

Each person signing up to gift aid gets a fob. This is so we can track every single item they donated with a barcode. The barcode is unique to that person so we know that Mr J Bloggs has donated 4 items as we sell them through the till we can claim the right amount.

It all seems rather complicated but we try to make it as easy as possible as the more people signed up, the more stuff we can sell with added gift aid and the more money we can raise!

That 25% works on everything once sold, be it clothes, books, CDs, DVDs, Bric-a-Brac, etc....

So please, if you can, please, please, pleeeeaaaase sign up to gift aid when donating goods or money to charity as it really does make a difference.

Plus Brook Green is currently TOP SHOP, NUMBERO UNO, THE BEST, NUMBER 1 for the percentage of items sold which are gift aided, and we like to keep it that way!

Happy New Year!

The festivities are nearly over for another year and as 2013 disappears over the cloudy horizon, in rolls 2014 with new exciting things for Brook Green (We hope!)

We would like to thank every customer, every donor, every gift aid sign up, and everyone reading this blog for their support and patronage this year, in keeping us full of goodies and raising money for Trinity Hospice.
We have improved sales on last year and intend to keep the upward trend, but we couldn't do it without you all,
so we sincerely thank you.

And as a little treat (and to copy all the big shops) we have our January sale on.
Up to 75% off!!
So with tops from as little as 50p, dresses from £2, and coats from £5, treat yourself to a new wardrobe at Trinity Hospice Brook Green.

But then of course you realise your wardrobe is too full/full of things you now hate/things that don't fit and you need to have a clear out.
Well please bring them to us, during opening hours, and we can make very good use of them.
Without your awesome donations our shop would be empty and we would be sad and that would never do :(
Also as I mention pretty much every post (Sorry...I'm not sorry!! Gift Aid is worth mentioning every time as it all adds up!) if you are a UK taxpayer we can claim Gift Aid on any time as we sell it and this helps more money go to Trinity Hospice, which is why we are here in the first place!

Enough shop talk now...

We hope you have a lovely New Year and look forward to whatever the future will bring.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

(Picked this one as 1) They haven't got to that part yet here in London 2013, 2) Big Ben explodes! and 3) It was the first one I found on YouTube...)

Who wants NEW Miu Miu Shoes?

WE DO!
A miracle has happened today. The once in a lifetime, rarest of the rare, magical moments has happened. A pair of designer shoes has been donated IN MY SIZE!!!! REJOICE REJOICE! Praise be, hurrah and hallelujah!

You might be thinking, well why are you telling us as you are surely going to buy them....Well no. Sadly they might fit ON my feet, but I cannot walk in them. Barely stand.
So my rejoicing might be a bit eager, but I just couldn't help myself. Especially as they are Miu Miu which is one of my (and ours at BGreen) favourite labels.

The young and more fun than Prada, offshoot seems to produce lush shoes every season.
These are not current season, but we think they will never go out of fashion. Too pretty to be dated!

It was like unwrapping a present when these came in. (And they are gift aided which, I fear I am beginning to repeat myself on but I really must, adds 25% of the selling price as extra money to Trinity Hospice!)

Time to unwrap the shoes....
Even the box is nice

TA DA! Just look at those beauties!

These Fluro pink "Calzature Donna" sandals could be yours for £300
Size 7 1/2 (eur 40 1/2)
The heel is 4 inches high with a platform at the front.
BRAND NEW
Still in the shoe bags in the box.

Please come and buy them so I don't keep trying them on and sighing that I can't walk in them!

Brook Green Needs Your STUFF!

Due to a few good weeks of sales, we are getting really short of stock!
As you know, we aim to (and do) put out new things everyday. However this means that a few days of no or low amounts of donations means we we run low on stock.
WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF THINGS!

So I might have made things sound a little worse than they are, but Brook Green needs some good quality, fabulous donations, so here we are, begging you to have a pre-Christmas sort out and bring in your unwanted items for us to sell.

We are desperately short of ladies shoes -
Any style any size, as long as they are reasonable for sale and a matching pair, we would want them.

Our pile of handbags are also running a little low -
Again, any size will be gladly accepted, as long as they are still in a condition to be used.

Finally we are always grateful for Men's clothes and shoes. They don't come in as often and so our rails never seem totally full of men's items.

High street or designer we shall take it all!

We will ask you to Gift Aid them of course, but that will only take seconds of your time and help us raise more funds (at no cost to you!) and your items well get a cool barcode and make all the other non gift aid items jealous...

Of course we will take in anything saleable that comes in - clothes, books, CD's DVD's, bric-a-brac - but those listed are our main wants right now.

If you can donate, please bring your items to the shop, Location of which is here during opening hours 10am - 6pm. It sounds rather obvious but sadly things which are left outside when we are shut are stolen (a very sad thing, we know) or damaged and therefore unsellable.

Thanking you all in advance.

Isabel Marant Linen Coat

Isabel Marant is a French house of fashion founded 1994 by Isabel Marant and we have a lovely linen coat for sale, donated about 10 mins ago, just before opening.

We get asked for Isabel Marant prety much every week at least, I guess with Brook Green being a rather French part of London, people want the Parisian 'look'.
Never had anything by them before, and then today we get this lovely coat.

A faded khaki colour it is button fastening with belt, and the same detailing on the sleeves.
- However there are worn marks on the sleeves, but we think they will come out with a good dry clean.

£250

Plus as this is a gift aid item we will get an extra £62.50 from HMRC, meaning this donation will raise a total of £312.50 for Trinity Hospice.

£15 will sponsor a Trinity nurse to provide 1 hour of inpatient care.
£25 will sponsor a Trinity nurse to make a visit to a patient in the community
£65 will sponsor a week’s worth of single use equipment for one of our nurses to provide practical and safe care to people in their own homes.
£212 will sponsor one of our community nurses for one day.
£400 will sponsor 24 hours of specialist inpatient nursing care.

What a fantastic donation!

Victorian Family Photos

These lovely framed photos are all over 100 years old. We found the latest one being from 1910!

Beautifully framed and a striking display makes these 3 pictures pipe up everyone's interest, wondering who these people were and who they are related to.
Let's get the BBC with their "Who do you think you are" people in to check. Who knows, they might be related to someone super famous! (or not....Admittedly chances are slim, but we can speculate!)

Recognise anyone?
A lot of the photos come from French photographer studios.

Some are faded due to time and being exposed to the light, as old photos do, but I think this just adds to them. Much more interesting then instagram!

They are 9 1/2 inches (24cms) by 27 1/2 inches (70cms)
£20 each

Give in to Givenchy

Yet another donation which made me take a deep breath. Amazing items from last week are slowly being valued and priced and made presentable for sale, this is the first....

These 2 piece dress/shirt combination is Givenchy, but I guess I gave it away in the title!
The house of Givenchy was founded in 1952 by designer Hubert de Givenchy.
This is more 1980's then 1950's, but it is still a lovely piece on clothing.

The dress is embellished with multicoloured 'gems' in the top of the bodice. The shirt is covered at the cuffs and trim with the same 'gems' giving the overall outfit both subtle and not so subtle eye catching light.
They are both a size 10 (eur 38) but I would say they would fit a 12 (eur 40) as the dress and blouse are very loose fitting.

We couldn't find anything similar on the ol' internet and our friends in the know hadn't seen anything before, so I say it is super rare!* ha.
(*don't quote me on that.)

There is some damage to this though, on the dress part there is a hole - see photo - but when both are worn you can't really see it.

Due to the damage this outfit is sold as seen.
£260

Wear the piece as the complete ensemble or just the dress for an evening out, or throw the blouse over a simple black camisole for instant glamour.

Bumper Bag of Designer Donations

You know how I love a good bag of donations, (and some awesome amazing alliteration in the title!), well today we got one and the lovely donor lady signed up to Gift aid so she gets extra good bonus points! HURRAH!

Not only were the garments vintage/retro they are also designer, which helps us raise money for Trinity Hospice.

We do get people in buying for TV (BBC television centre is only up the road. Well, was. I mean it is. It is still there but the people are not. Oh you know what I mean....) and so the very stylised stuff went first. Instant 70's outfit done.

Brook Green also gets a few students about who love to play with mixing high street with funky retro items.
Finally we get the fashionistas who know to invest in certain items. (Not bragging, but we do get fab pieces in....OK yes yes we are bragging, just a little bit.)

When we get in items which are collectible or we are unsure on how to price, we have some friends in the know, who help us out so we can get the best price for Trinity Hospice.

This bag today was full of interesting pieces. Hurrah! (again)
Harrods own brand evening dress (C1970s), Kenzo jacket (C1980s), Yves Saint Laurent (now just Saint Laurent) polka dot suit, Gianni Versace shirt and Marianne Fassler bits.
I would snap up the YSL suit if it wasn't a size 10!

Going to focus on each piece later once I can get some photos and some pricing details.

Of course I can't leave you without something for your eyes, so it's video time....
Fashion. Hmmmm I know you think I'm going to post some more Bowie (I was so very tempted, but it is middle of the week and everyone needs a perk up) so gone for some Flight of the Conchords.

Although our fashion is not dangerous. Just FABULOUS!

Meet the Volunteers - Lisa

It's Wednesday so that means Lisa is in to swish up and replenish the bric-a-brac.

Along with being super and opening up when I have morning meetings etc, Lisa is our bric-a-brac display woman who makes sure the old stuff sells and the new stuff looks amazing.

The lovely Lisa and her bargain bric-a-brac
Lisa has been at Brook Green pretty much since we opened in 2011 and knows everything there is to know about stuff in the shop. Find her rearranging things or on the till Wednesday morning and she will help you find what you are after.

Mother to 2 lovely boys, Lisa works around school times to have some time for herself....and to find the best bargains as she does love to shop.

Supplied with coffee and given many jobs to do I can concentrate on clearing space and sorting stock and I know the shop will be perfect in Lisa's capable hands.

All the volunteers are great at signing up Gift Aid donors, but Lisa gives herself the challenge to grab more then most - and I can happily say I don't bribe her to do it...unless the extra coffee counts!

When Lisa leaves Wednesday afternoon her shift is taken over by Andreea

Lisa in her own words "When I first started I had not worked for a long time. Since volunteering at Brook Green, I have learnt loads (ie: How to work a till) and I have become more confident. I enjoy working at the shop because the other staff are lovely and I get on with everyone. I also like to have a few hours just getting away from home and being in a different environment. I cannot see myself ever leaving because of how fun it is to work at Brook Green."
(And I definitely didn't bribe her to say that! Honest!)

***

If you wish to volunteer at Brook Green or any of Trinity Hospice shops (Locations here) get in touch by emailing Anna Alcock retailvolunteers@trinityhospice.org.uk or phoning her on 020 7787 1000

Bring in your Bling!

Another donation plea.

We sell a lot of jewellery. Mainly costume, but occasionally we have gold and silver, and sometimes even diamonds!
Not that we are boasting (well maybe a little bit....) but now we are running desperately low on jewels.

Any necklaces, bracelets, rings and even earrings you no longer wear, please don't throw them away, but bring them into us during shop opening hours (Mon to Sat 10 - 6, Sun 11 - 4) and we will gladly take them off your hands.
We would love it even more if you Gift Aid your donation. When you come in with your fabulous donation, there is a quick form we get you fill out and voila. That is all you have to do. For 2 mins on your time we can raise even more money for Trinity Hospice! Brilliant!

Men! Don't think you can get away with ignoring this plea.
Watches, bracelets, necklaces and cufflinks.

Cufflinks. The rarest of the rare. Something we are always asked for, yet hardly ever have. This makes us sad. Your unwanted cufflinks could make one Brook Green charity shop very happy indeed.

As much as we love donations, please do think about what you give. Broken jewellery or odd earrings are not really much good to us (unless it's gold....mmmm gold. Shiny)

Thank you very much

Trinity Hospice & Ebay

Not entirely about Brook Green, but as it is all to do with raising money, I shall share with you all, as I'm kind like that.

Trinity Hospice Shops has their own ebay account.
New items and excess stock from various shops go there and of course if Joe Bloggs wants to donate a % of his own ebay sales to Trinity Hospice he can. (What a kind fella Joe Bloggs is!)

As I said, this is nothing to do with Brook Green directly so for the moment we don't have any of our stock on there, but I am working on that! We want to sell to the world (and complete it with world domination!!! *cue evil manic laugh*)

"Without Music, Life would be a mistake"

Well, that's what Friedrich Nietzsche tells us in Twilight of the Idols.
Not that we want to get too highbrow here (yes we totally googled for that quote. Who has read Nietzsche,...really?), but he does have a point.
Music is everywhere now and we want some!

We are in desperate need of CDs and interesting records (please not Perry Como or Blah does Blah in the style of Blah. Not that there is anything wrong with them, but we have plenty already. Alan Smith plays Showtunes with Bagpipes, anyone?)

So, in the words of AC/DC, For those about to rock, we salute you (but please share the love and bring in some music to our shop!)

All genres welcome, but please no scratched ones, or cheeky homemade ones*

*yes believe it or not, they do get donated and it costs us to dispose of them so please don't do it.

And so it begins....

Halfway between Hammersmith and Shepherds Bush, exists Brook Green's best kept secret. Trinity Hospice's shop at 84 Shepherds Bush Road, W6 7PD, is full of anything and everything people can donate!

This first blog is to introduce you to our shop and Trinity Hospice, but we hope to introduce you to staff and volunteers, show stock and the interesting, unusual and exciting donations.

The Brook Green store has a loyal and generous local community providing high quality regular donations of pre-owned stock - clean, high quality merchandise.
This means new stock all the time and designer labels at accessible prices.

For shopping that wont break the bank and knowing you are helping to support Trinity Hospice, we have the most amazing new and nearly new designer and vintage bargains. Search out our donated designer labels from brands like Paul Smith, Kenzo, Prada, Miu Miu, Diane Von Furstenburg, Chloe, Hugo Boss, and Armani and many others!

We carry woman's wear and menswear, accessories, home ware, art,  books - including 1st editions and collectables, music and children's clothes and toys.  New stock goes out everyday so you never know what you might find....

We rely on donations and so there may be some blog pleas on occasion, but we do ask nicely!  When stock is donated we would love everyone to sign up to Gift Aid. It only works if you are a UK Taxpayer, but it really helps us as it increases the value of your donation at no cost to you.  Gift Aid now adds 25% to the value of the goods you donate to Trinity.
The important information here explains all. It might not sound a lot (25p extra for £1) but it all adds up!

This blog is here to raise the profile of the Trinity Hospice charity so please feel free to use the comments section to express an interest in your favourite items and support
Trinity Hospice (or find them on twitter or facebook)

Trinity provides skilled, compassionate end of life care to individuals and support for families in our central and south west London community.  All our patient and family services are free of charge.  Our services include nursing and medical care, counselling and practical support, welfare advice, occupational and physiotherapy, complementary therapies, creative activities and bereavement care.  It costs £9.6 million each year to maintain Trinity’s services but less than a third of our funding comes from the NHS. We depend on the support of our local community in the form of donations, fundraising and legacies to continue our work.

And so the Brook Green Shop Blog begins....
